When Toyota launched the RAV4 in 1996, they created a whole new category called the crossovers. It was definitely one of its kind back then with having various features such as five seats, wide, easy loading cargo space, comfortable ride quality, easy to drive with a commanding view of the road: all features of what people liked in SUVs. Now that there are more than 45 vehicles under the crossover category, the Toyota RAV4 is still a top seller which shows its popularity among car buyers.
Keeping that in mind, the car manufacturer over the years have come with variants of this particular car, carefully adding more features without alienating its followers. The result? A modern design with better fuel economy, even more cargo space along with luxurious interiors. This year, Toyota has come with a new model – the fourth generation RAV4, which is identical in size to its predecessor and having changes in the general layout and driveline configurations. The sole power source now is a port-injected 2.5-liter four-cylinder, with a new six-speed automatic transmission as compared to last year which had four-cylinder paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.
The 2013 RV4 has 3 trim levels – LE, XLE and Limited. The limited version has eight-way power driver’s seat along with a heated six-way front passenger seat whereas in addition to the LE & XLE which only have power six-way adjustable front seats. When it comes to cargo space, the new RV4’s cargo space in now 2 feet bigger than the predecessor and is further improved by folding down the 2nd row of seats with a simple push of a level.
The new RV4’s interior does resemble of the old model. However, it has more technology along with better quality materials used and increased comfort. The addition of a leather band which runs the entire length of the dashboard is a noticeable change as it breaks the monotony of plastic giving it a more elegant look. The seats are fabric-trimmed in RV4 LE whereas XLE and limited version add a better quality fabric with French stitching to the sides of the seats.
The 2013 Toyota RV4 comes with 8 standard airbags which includes a driver’s side knee bag for extra safety. The car makers have also put an optional blind spot monitor, which flashes when other objects or cars are in the driver’s blind spot. It also has a Vehicle Stability Control system and a new Dynamic Torque control system on all-wheel drive models which use sensors to find out whether wheels are gripping properly or not and also then apply appropriate power to the wheels if it is required.
This machine comes in both front wheel and all wheel drive configurations with a mileage of 24 mpg in city and 31 mpg on highway. The AWD version gets reduced fuel economy because it offers power to all four wheels rather than just the front two. The ride is stable on light turns which is comfortable for the passengers.
The 2013 Toyota RAV4 is definitely a huge leap as compared to its previous generation models and will definitely appeal to the younger generation of car buyers.
